A Loon on Stony Lake
If there’s one bird that is emblematic of the eastern Canadian lakes, it would have to be the Common Loon (Gavia immer). Swimming alone or in pairs, they are a summer fixture on the lakes, and their haunting calls (often at dusk, dawn or deep in the night) make the soundtrack of summer memories. The Loon also figures prominently on the nation’s dollar coin - known with characteristic Canadian whimsy, as a ‘Loonie’.
